Helping students with anxiety transition to college 🏫

Hey everyone,

I had an amazing conversation with Dan Jordan on the podcast recently, and I just had to share some highlights with you all. Dan's expertise in college accessibility services is incredible, and he shared so much valuable information about helping students with anxiety or other disabilities transition from high school to college.

We dove into some really important topics:

  1. Self-advocacy: Dan emphasized how crucial it is for students to start practicing these skills in high school. It's all about that "I do, we do, you do" approach to gradually build confidence.
  2. Managing anxiety in college: Dan shared some simple but effective tips like eating breakfast, getting regular exercise, and prioritizing sleep. These basics can make a huge difference!
  3. Getting accommodations in college: We talked about the process of requesting and using accommodations, and how it differs from high school IEPs or 504 plans.
  4. Preparing ahead: Dan stressed the importance of planning ahead and getting support systems in place before issues arise.

One thing that really stuck with me was Dan's emphasis on normalizing anxiety. Everyone experiences it to some degree, especially in new situations like starting college. It's all about learning to manage it effectively.

Dan has an amazing checklist for preparing to request accommodations in college, as well as a book called "Self Advocacy for Higher Education" I highly recommend checking these out if you're a parent or student preparing for this transition.

I hope you find this information as helpful as I did. Remember, supporting our kids through this transition is so important, but we also need to let them take the lead.

Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else you'd like to know about this topic!

Take care,

Cynthia

“Everyone has anxiety. Some people manage it really well and other people don't. And like, this is the stuff that we have to work on. And that yucky feeling that you feel inside of your stomach or your head or wherever you experience anxiety or that tightness, everybody has that sometimes. And nothing has gone wrong.”

Then, in perfect timing, she reached out to me, and I knew instantly that we had to collaborate. What I didn’t know about Kristi until we talked is that she’s a former...

Hey Reader Just wrapped up another episode of The Teen Anxiety Maze, and I couldn't wait to share it with you. I dug into something we all deal with: avoidance. You know that thing on your to-do list that keeps getting pushed to tomorrow? Yeah, that one. We talked about why we do that and how it might be linked to anxiety. Here's the scoop: We all avoid stuff. It's not just you. Avoiding things feels good... for about five minutes. Then it usually makes us feel worse. Try this: Instead of "I...
